Cardiac Surgeon Joins CMHVI

Paul W. Weldner, M.D., a cardiothoracic surgeon, has been appointed to the Central Maine Medical Center Medical Staff. He is practicing with the Cardiothoracic Surgical Division at the Central Maine Heart and Vascular Institute in Lewiston.

Prior to joining the greater Lewiston-Auburn medical community, Weldner practiced for over 18 years with Maine Heart Surgical Associates in Portland. He served as the surgical group's president from 2004 through 2007 and was director of the Heart Valve Program at Maine Medical Center, where he specialized in minimally invasive heart valve surgery and percutaneous aortic valve implants. He also served as a clinical professor at the University of Vermont College of Medicine's Department of Surgery.

Weldner brings to CMMC nearly two decades of experience in coronary revascularization, reconstruction of the aorta and aortic root, and the highest level of skill in repairing and replacing diseased valves of the heart. He has gained training throughout the United States and Europe in minimally invasive valve surgery and percutaneous valve replacement, and serves on the Edwards Corporation's Medical Board of Minimally Invasive Valve Surgery.

"CMHVI has provided high quality cardiac surgical care to our region for the past 10 years. Dr. Weldner brings our program some of the most state-of-the-art techniques and technologies in cardiac surgery," said CMHVI cardiac surgeon Carmine Frumiento, M.D.

A graduate of Muhlenberg College in Allentown, Pa., Weldner double majored in chemistry and natural sciences, earning Suma Cum Laude and honorary Phi Beta Kappa status. He earned his medical degree with honors at The Pennsylvania State University Milton S. Hershey College of Medicine in Hershey, Pa. where he completed general surgery and cardiothoracic surgery residencies. He served as chief resident for both surgical training programs, and was named Resident of the Year during his internship. He was awarded the Pennsylvania Association of Thoracic Fellowship Award during his cardiac training.

Weldner completed a post-doctoral fellowship in the Division of Artificial Hearts at Hershey Medical Center, as well as a pediatric cardiothoracic surgery fellowship at Great Ormond Street Hospital for Sick Children in London.

He is certified by the American Board of Surgery and the American Board of Thoracic Surgery, and is a member of the Society of Thoracic Surgeons. He has coauthored numerous scholarly articles published in various professional journals.

"We are delighted to have Dr. Weldner join the CMHVI cardiac surgery team. His skill in valvular heart surgery and commitment to quality patient care will complement the work the cardiac surgery team has provided the residents of central and western Maine these past ten years," said CMHVI Executive Director Susan Horton.

He is practicing in association with cardiothoracic surgeon Carmine Frumiento, M.D., physician assistants Danielle George and Kevin Quigley, and other members of the CMHVI team. Central Maine Cardiothoracic Surgery, located at 60 High Street in Lewiston, can be reached at 795-8260.
