Arbovirus, Serum (Encephalitis)

Mnemonic:    [ARBO SERUM]
Name:    Arbovirus, Serum (Encephalitis)
Specimen:    1 mL serum from a Red SST or Red top tube. A convalescent + acute serum is required for all MIA test requests with sympton onset date between (June 1st to Nov 30th)
2 forms must be submitted WITH the sample:
1) The health care provider must completely fill out the Human Arboviral Request Form (This is a required form)
2) The lab needs to fill out an HETL Virology Requisition Form

Send a serum sample (whenever possible) along with any CSF samples.

Paired sera recommended:
--Acute collected 2-10 days after onset of symptoms
--Convalescent collected 14-21 days after the acute specimen was collected. (A negative result on acute specimens collected within the first 10 days of illness is not sufficient to rule out infection)

Specimen screened for:
--West Nile Virus (WNV)
--Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE or EEEV)
--St. Louis Encephalitis (SLE)
Minimum Spec:    1.0 mL
Spec Stability:    Sample should be kept @ 4 degrees Celsius

  Method:    EIA for IgM and IgG
Note:    Forms to be filled out are kept in a red folder in Microbiology Dept in the cupboard with the AFB mailers. PH edidemiologist phone number is 207-287-3747.
Processing Info:    If sample can be gotten to the PHL within 48 hours, send refrigerated or on wet ice. If not freeze sample immediately at -20C.

Turn Around Time: Results should be expected within 5-7 business days
Unacceptable Conditions: Specimens received without an Arboviral form and clinical details or with insufficient material to analyze (DO NOT FREEZE)

Results : IgM Multiplex Assay : WNV “Negative or “Positive”, EEE “Negative” or “Positive”, SLE “Negative” or “Positive” Comments may include: “Sent to CDC for confirmation.”

Laboratory confirmed cases of WNV, SLE or EEE must be reported immediately to Maine CDC at 188.821.5821
