Urine Microscopic Examination

Name:    Urine Microscopic Examination
Specimen:    Submit a clean voided or cath specimen in a sterile container. Do not use a B/D transport tube. A first-morning specimen is preferred to improve diagnostic value.

The sample must be delivered to the lab within one hour of collection or refrigerated for up to 12 hours.
Reference Range:    Urine WBC or RBC per HPF: 0-5
 Urine Squamous or Round Epithelials per HPF:
 Urine Bacteria: None Seen
 Urine Crystals: None Seen (noted only if present)
 Urine Casts: None Seen (noted only if present)

Note:    Ordered reflexively if the routine urinalysis shows it is indicated by the chemical examination (

Criteria for reflex microscopic exam:. Urine dipstick positive for any one or combination of the following: Blood, Protein (>=30), leukocyte esterase, nitrite.
