Wet Mount

Mnemonic:    [WET MOUNT]
Name:    Wet Mount
Specimen:     Swab from vaginal vault wall placed immediately in 1 mL sterile saline.

If the sample is received in the lab more than one hour after collection, we will not be able to report on the presence or absence of trichomonas due to loss of motility.

Glass collection tubes cannot be sent through the pneumatic tube system unprotected. You can, however, use one of the hard, plastic "rockets" (used for Blood Culture bottles). To keep the tube from breaking it would be best to wrap the glass collection tube with gauze before placing it in the hard protective carrier.
Reference Range:    Negative
  Method:    Microscopy
Note:    Examined for the presence of Trichomonas, Yeast, "Clue Cells", WBC, RBC and Bacteria.

Starting 9-10-2014 the Lab will be offering the Affirm Vaginal Microbial Screen. It is a much more sensitive test to detect Trichomonas vaginalis, Gardnerella vaginalis and Candida sp.

The collection systems are not interchangablle. We cannot do a Wet Mount on a sample collected for the Affirm method nor can we process the sample for Affirm testing if the sample was collected in saline.

At CMMC the wet mount will no longer be offered. Bridgton and Rumford Hospitals will be performing this test for STAT screening primarily in the Emergency Departments.
