Lead, <6 yr of age

Mnemonic:    [LEAD]
Name:    Lead, <6 yr of age
Specimen:    1 mL whole blood from a Lavender top tube. Also acceptable are tan (sodium heparin) or green (lithium heparin) tubes.
Unacceptable samples: Blue tubes (sodium citrate) or clotted samples.

Venous or capillary samples are acceptable. If capillary sample collection: Clean the puncture site well with soap and water before the collection procedure begins.
Minimum Spec:    0.3 mL
Neonatal Spec:    1 green microtainer (no gel) see note below
Ref Lab/Code:    HETL
Reference Range:    Children: < 5 ug/dL
Note:    If this a repeat or follow up to a prior positive, a venous specimen is required according to CDC guidelines. A venous sample is preferred since it is more reliably free from contamination than a capillary sample.

Maine HETL will perform lead testing on children less than 6 years of age. If older than 6 years, order LEAD, ADULT which is sent to ARUP Lab.
