Pyruvate (Pyruvic Acid)

Name:    Pyruvate (Pyruvic Acid)
Specimen:    2 mL whole blood from a Green heparin or Lavender ETDA tube. Special procedure -- notify lab before drawing; requires special handling immediately after collection.

Pyruvic Acid Specimen Handling Instructions:

1.Immediately after collection, add exactly 1 mL specimen to a chilled pyruvate collection tube containing 2 mL 8 percent (w/v) percholoric acid (ARUP supply #16567).

2.Mix well for 30 seconds then place in an ice bath for 10 minutes.

3.Centrifuge for 10 minutes at 1500 x g.

4.Decant 2 mL (Min: 1 mL) supernatant to an ARUP Standard Transport Tube and freeze.

5.Prepare specimen for transport using standard procedures.

Whole blood: If less than 1 mL specimen is added to collection tube, pH of supernatant will be too low for testing to be performed.

Sample is unacceptable if not processed according to these instructions. Critical Frozen sample. Freeze immediately and transport frozen.
