Vanillylmandelic Acid, Urine (VMA)

Mnemonic:    [U VMA]
Name:    Vanillylmandelic Acid, Urine (VMA)
Specimen:    4 mL aliquot from a 24 hour or random urine collection. PATIENT PREPARATION: Abstain from medications for 72 hours prior to collection. REFRIGERATE sample during collection.
Minimum Spec:    1 mL
Transport Temp:    Refrigerated
Spec Stability:    Stable 7 days refrigerated.
Ref Lab/Code:    ARUP 0080421
  Method:    HPLC/Tandem Mass Spectrometry
Note:    Moderately elevated VMA (vanillylmandelic acid) can be caused by a variety of factors such as essential hypertension, intense anxiety, intense physical exercise, and numerous drug interactions (including some over-the-counter medications and herbal products).

Medications that may interfere with catecholamines and their metabolites include amphetamines and amphetamine-like compounds, appetite suppressants, bromocriptine, buspirone, caffeine, chlorpromazine, clonidine, disulfiram, diuretics (in doses sufficient to deplete sodium), epinephrine, glucagon, guanethidine, histamine, hydrazine derivatives, imipramine, levodopa (L-dopa, SinemetŪ), lithium, MAO inhibitors, melatonin, methyldopa (AldometŪ), morphine, nitroglycerin, nose drops, propafenone (Rythmol), radiographic agents, rauwolfia alkaloids (Reserpine), tricyclic antidepressants, and vasodilators. The effects of some drugs on catecholamine metabolite results may not be predictable.
Processing Info:    Record total volume and time collected on the aliquot tube. If the sample is a random urine, write "Random" on the label.

Enter and verify SR TIME and SR VOLUME in LIS before transmitting the packing list (even on random samples)
