The VITROS Opiate assay detects morphine, morphine-3-glucuronide, and codeine in human urine. It also detects synthetic opiates such as hydromorphone, hydrocodone, oxymorphone, oxycodone, dihydrocodeine, levorphanol and the narcotic antagonist nalorphine. Poppy seeds contain opiates; ingestion of products containing poppy seeds may cause a positive test result.

This assay uses a threshold concentration of 300 ng/mL to separate a negative result from a presumptive positive result.
