Specimen:    1 mL serum from a Red SST or Red top tube. Plasma from lavender (EDTA) is also acceptable.

Unacceptable samples: hemolyzed, lipemic or cadaveric specimens
Minimum Spec:    0.5 mL

Note:    Not recommended for primary screening. HIV-2 is endemic to West Africa and rarely seen in the US. Screen for presence of HIV-2 infection in patients with an epidemiologic link to Africa whose HIV 1,2 Ab is repeatedly reactive and the HIV-1 immunoblot is negative or not conclusive.

If HIV-2 antibody screen is repeatedly reactive, then HIV-2 Antibody, Supplemental (an HIV antibody type differentiation assay), will be added and then performed within one day.
