Sample should be collected within 48-72 hours of onset of illness. The smaller the sample and the more formed the stool, the lower the diagnostic yield.

Place the stool sample (less than a pea-size quantity) in Viral Transport Media (M4) if possible. If transport media is not available submit the sample in a sterile container. Do NOT freeze the stool sample.
Use the PHL lab virology requisition form and mark off Norovirus by PCR.
If an outbreak is suspected, contact the mirobiology department for an "Outbreak #" for an epidemiological investigation.
