CMMC Has Many Services to Help New Moms Who are Breastfeeding
CMMC is committed to providing support and assistance to breastfeeding mothers' during their hospital stay. Both moms and babies need to learn the skill of feeding and will have many opportunities to do this with the assistance of the nurses and lacation consultants.
Breastfeeding is a natural process of feeding for mother and baby.
As a Baby-Friendly hospital – one of just 5 in Maine – one of our goals is to help new mothers learn about breastfeeding.
We offer breastfeeding classes that cover the basics, including: breast anatomy; establishing and maintaining milk production; nursing positions; latch-on techniques; how to know that your baby is getting enough, and resources available to breastfeeding mothers. The 2.5-hour class gives participants an opportunity for discussion and questions.
Expectant moms are encouraged to bring their partner or support person so they may learn how to be helpful during the breastfeeding learning process.
New moms may also benefit from joining a CMMC breastfeeding support group, which meets weekly.
Also, as part of its participation in the Baby-Friendly program, CMMC created a “Breastfeeding Matters Program” which provides Lactation Consultant services to inpatients and outpatients. These specially trained breastfeeding experts visit new moms in the hospital, and are also available for follow-up appointments. FMI: Call 207-795-2528.
CMMC also offers breast pump rentals and sales. Please contact one of CMMC's lacation consultants to learn more about this.
