Child Safety Seat Program

CMMC Offers Child Passenger Safety Seat Program

The evidence is clear: proper use of car seats saves the lives of children.

National Highway Traffic Safety Administration statistics show that using properly installed car seats reduces the risk of death by 71 percent for infants and by 54 percent for children between one and four years of age. Child car seats also reduced the need for hospitalization after a car accident.

Maine law requires that children ride in an appropriate child safety seat. If cost is a concern, parents/guardians should call the Bureau of Highway Safety at 207-626-3840 and ask about qualifying for a free car seat. (If you are expecting a child, this should be done prior to the baby's arrival.)

Installed child safety seats should be checked at a car seat inspection station. Visit the Maine Bureau of Highway Safety at the Bureau of Highway Safety website for information on Child Passenger Distribution and Inspection sites.

Also, CMMC offers car seat safety instruction as part of its Infant Care class. Check the Childbirth Education events calendar for class dates and times. Appointments can be made to have your safety seat inspected by a certified child passenger safety technician, by calling 795-2695.
