Who we are History

Central Maine Medical Center – a commitment to knowledge

Since its opening in 1891, Central Maine Medical Center has been a knowledge-focused organization. In fact, the hospital created the Central Maine General Hospital Training School (now CMMC School of Nursing) prior to accepting its first patient. The school graduated its first nursing students in 1893.

Over the years, CMMC has developed other formal education programs, including the Clark F. Miller School of Radiologic Technology -- the first program of its kind in Maine -- and the School of Nuclear Medicine. In the late 1970s, the hospital created the Family Medicine Residency Program, which has grown to accommodate some 18 resident physicians annually.

CMMC’s Pastoral Care Department, established in the early 1980s, provides accredited Clinical Pastoral Education modules for clergy and laypersons who wish to expand their knowledge in the provision of pastoral care in a healthcare setting.

Tri-County Emergency Medical Services (TCEMS), the region’s emergency medical services education and training provider, is headquartered at CMMC. TCEMS promotes excellence in all aspects of emergency care, offering EMT, EMT-I and Paramedic certification and training.

Research connections

Medical science can only advance through research. This basic premise, combined with the promise that experimental treatments offer to some patients, has had a profound influence on CMMC’s philosophy for providing patient care.

CMMC’s Comprehensive Cancer Center has a decades-long research affiliation with the world-renowned Dana Farber Cancer Institute in Boston, a connection that gives Maine patients access to leading edge chemotherapy treatment options. Future cancer patients benefit as well, since information gained through these clinical trials is essential to developing and refining new cancer care treatments.

Research activities at Central Maine Medical Center assumed a larger profile in 2003 with the opening of the Central Maine Heart and Vascular Institute (CMHVI), CMMC’s advanced cardiac services program. CMHVI was the first clinical service at CMMC to include research as part of its founding charter.
