Physician Specialties Rheumatology

The rheumatologist cares for patients with diseases of the joints, muscles, bones and tendons. The rheumatologist diagnoses and treats arthritis, back pain, muscle strains, common athletic injuries, and collagen diseases. The rheumatologist may work closely with other specialists, including orthopedic surgeons and physical therapists.

Rheumatologists must first gain certification in internal medicine from the American Board of Internal Medicine before they can receive subspecialty certification.
