Physician Specialties Respiratory Disease

Respiratory disease specialists, also called pulmonologists, are concerned with diseases of the lungs and airways. They diagnose and treat cancer, pneumonia, pleurisy, asthma, occupational diseases, bronchitis, sleep disorders, emphysema, and other complex disorders of the lungs. Pulmonologists test lung functions in many ways, including direct visualization with various scopes. Many pulmonary disease experts are also skilled in critical care, and may prescribe and monitor mechanical breathing assistance.

Pulmonologists gain subspecialty certification after first earning certification in internal medicine from the American Board of Internal Medicine.
