Physical medicine and rehabilitation, also called physiatry, is the medical specialty concerned with diagnosis and treatment of people with physical and/or cognitive impairment or disability, including painful or functionally

limiting conditions. Physiatrists are concerned with restoration or development of physical, psychological, social, occupational and vocational functions in persons whose abilities are limited by disease, trauma, congenital disorders or pain.

Physicians practicing this specialty are certified by the American Board of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation.
