Physician Specialties Ophthalmology

Ophthalmologists are the only physicians trained to diagnose and medically or surgically treat eye and visual disorders. They often prescribe vision services such as glasses and contact lenses. The ophthalmologist serves as a consultant to physicians and other professionals.

To gain certification, ophthalmologists must pass the written and oral examinations of the American Board of Ophthalmology.
