Nephrology

The nephrologist is concerned with disorders of the kidney, high blood pressure, fluid and mineral balance, and dialysis of body wastes when the kidneys do not function. Nephrologists may consult with surgeons about kidney transplantation.

A physician must first be certified in internal medicine by the American Board of Internal Medicine before seeking subspecialty certification in nephrology.
