Physician Specialties Internal Medicine

The internist is a physician who provides patients with long-term, comprehensive care in the office and the hospital, managing both common illnesses and complex problems. These physicians care for adolescents, adults, and the elderly. Internists are primary care providers who incorporate an understanding of disease prevention, wellness, and psychosocial health issues. All internists are trained in emergency internal medicine and critical care. They often consult with subspecialists when confronted by medical issues requiring expertise in a narrow field of practice.

Gaining certification by the American Board of Internal Medicine provides the internist with the foundation for further training in numerous subspecialties.
