Physician Specialties Infectious Disease

Subspecialists in infectious diseases deal with infections of all types and in all organs. They are experts in the selective use of antibiotics and other infection-fighting drugs. AIDS patients and patients with fevers that have not been explained are often diagnosed and treated by infectious disease subspecialists. These doctors are experts in preventive medicine and diagnosing and treating illnesses that sometimes arise when people travel to unfamiliar locations.

Physicians who earn certification in infectious disease through the American Board of Internal Medicine must first become certified in internal medicine.
