Physician Specialties Gastroenterology

Subspecialists in gastroenterology attend to problems involving the digestive organs, including the stomach, bowels, liver and gallbladder. They treat such conditions as abdominal pain, ulcers, diarrhea, cancer and jaundice, and perform complex diagnostic and therapeutic procedures using lighted scopes to see internal organs. They often consult with surgeons when abdominal operations are necessary.

To attain certification in gastroenterology through the American Board of Internal Medicine, a physician must first be certified in internal medicine.
