Physician Specialties Family Practice

Family physicians are trained to prevent, diagnose and treat a wide variety of ailments in patients of all ages. These primary care doctors place special emphasis on caring for entire families on a continuing basis, using professional consultations and community resources when appropriate. Family practitioners complete a diverse training program that includes surgery, internal medicine, obstetrics-gynecology, pediatrics and geriatrics.

Some family doctors complete additional training and gain certification by the American Board of Family Practice (ABFP) in a subspecialty. However, to do so, they must first be certified by the ABFP in family practice. Several family physicians who practice in Central Maine Medical Family facilities are certified by the ABFP in geriatric medicine, a subspecialty concerned with the provision of healthcare to older individuals.
