Physician Specialties Emergency Medicine

Emergency physicians make the immediate decisions and take the initial actions necessary to prevent death or further disability for patients with acute illnesses or traumatic injuries. Although emergency medicine is usually based in a hospital emergency department, emergency doctors may have extensive responsibilities for prehospital emergency medical services provided in the field. Emergency physicians generally provide episodic care addressing a wide range of physical and psychological conditions.

Emergency doctors can seek certification through the American Board of Emergency Department.
