Anesthesiology |
An anesthesiologist provides surgical patients with pain
relief, maintains patients in a stable condition during surgery
and restores patients to sound condition immediately following
an operation. The anesthesiologist assesses the risks faced
by individual patients and helps optimize each patient's surgical
experience. Anesthesiologists may diagnose and treat acute,
long-standing pain problems. They also care for patients who
have critical illnesses or injuries. They may direct the resuscitation
of patients with cardiac or respiratory emergencies, sometimes
providing artificial ventilation.
Doctors who gain certification by the American Board of Anesthesiology
may be eligible to attain subspecialty certification in critical
care medicine and/or pain management through the same organization.
