Allergy-Immunology |
An allergist-immunologist is trained to evaluate, diagnose
and treat disorders that may involve the immune system. Examples
of such disorders include asthma, anaphylaxis, rhinitis, dermatitis,
eczema, and reactions to drugs, foods, and insect stings.
This physician's practice may extend to immune deficiency
diseases, problems related to autoimmune disease, organ transplantation,
malignancies of the immune system, and management of pulmonary
complications involving allergic diseases.
An allergist-immunologist must first gain certification in
internal medicine and/or pediatrics before seeking additional
certification by the American Board of Allergy and Immunology
(ABAI). (The ABAI is a joint board of the American Board of
Internal Medicine and the American Board of Pediatrics.)
