Cardiovacular Surgery |
Cardiac surgeons are physicians who have participated in
residency and advanced fellowship training programs that specialize
in cardiothoracic surgery. They have an in-depth understanding
of cardiovascular and thoracic physiology and disease processes.
Cardiac surgeons complete extensive clinical training that
allows them to develop technical expertise in specialty operative
procedures. Coronary artery bypass surgery, valvular heart
disease repair, and replacement of the aortic or mitral valve
are among the procedures the cardiac surgeon performs. A cardiac
surgeon can become board certified by the American Board of
Surgery in general surgery, cardiothoracic surgery and critical
care medicine.
