The Bennett Breast Care Center's Prosthetic Service
is about restoration: the restoration of a woman's natural
body symmetry and balance, and more importantlythe
restoration of self-confidence and self-esteem. This service
is uniquely suited to support, encourage, and empower women
struggling with the aftermath of breast cancer as well as
problems caused by congenital breast defects or plus-sized
breasts.
Whether a woman has undergone a mastectomy, is a nursing mother,
has a breast defect, or is having difficulty in finding high-quality
plus-size bras, the Bennett Center has a solution.
An experienced, specially-trained and Certified Prosthetic
Fitter is available to consult with patients. Women in the
Farmington, Rumford, Norway, or Bridgton areas who cannot
visit the Bennett Center can meet the Fitter at their local
hospital. She is also available to visit women who have difficulty
leaving their home or reside in a long-term care facility.
A Breast Prosthesis is a specially designed breast
form, designed to look and feel similar in weight, texture
and color to the natural breast. In addition to creating symmetry
(balance) in appearance, the form will replace weight to restore
the body's natural balance.
Moving Forward
.
- Following Mastectomy: Breast forms are worn outside
the body in a close-fitting, supportive and pocketed bra.
It is important to wear a weighted form even if you are
contemplating reconstruction at a later time.
- Following Lumpectomy: Depending on the amount of
breast tissue removed at the time of surgery you may need
to consider a partial shell or form that are designed to
equalize the breast size.
- Following Reconstruction: Women who have had reconstruction
may, on occasion, find a noticeable difference between the
remaining breast and the newly reconstructed one. Partial
forms are available that help to create a symmetrical appearance.
- Congenital Breast Defects: Whatever the cause for
a change in a woman's natural body symmetry and balance,
breast forms and shells are available to enhance and create
a symmetrical silhouette.
Full-Figured Women often have difficulty in finding
high-quality plus-sized bras. Good support is essential to
ultimate comfort and security. These well made bras feature
wide, padded straps in a set-in position that
keep them where they belongon the shoulder. The Center
has a variety of fashionable styles to choose from.
Nursing/Maternity Bras: Consultation with the Fitter
can provide valuable information about the proper size and
style of bras that nursing mothers need during the months
of pregnancy and lactation (breast feeding).
Post Cardiac Surgery: Patients who undergo cardiac
surgery need a well-made, supportive bra to aid in comfort
and healing during the post operative phase.
Insurance Coverage: The prices for prosthetics vary,
as does individual insurance coverage. It is helpful for you
to contact your insurance carrier to learn of your individual
benefits. The American Cancer Society and the Bennett Breast
Care Center have joined together to establish a Breast Bank
that allows women with no insurance to obtain a fitted prosthesis
at no cost. In addition, CMMC has an Emergency Needs Fund,
which, depending on a woman's financial situation, may
offer full or partial assistance.
A Prescription from your physician is required. The
prescription needs to state the primary diagnosis (such as
Breast Cancer, etc) and should include what items and how
many are being requested.
