Osteoporosis Center |
Osteoporosis - a disease marked by gradual weakening of the
bones - can rob women and men alike of mobility and independence.
But the disease's damaging effects are preventable.
Central Maine Medical Center provides state-of-the-art bone
density screening services at its Osteoporosis Center and
with its Mobile Osteoporosis Van, which brings screenings
to patients at Bridgton and Rumford hospitals, and other central
and western Maine communities.
Using low-dose x-rays of the lower back and one hip, the screening
is painless and takes less than 15 minutes to complete. A
physician specializing in osteoporosis reviews the scan sends
the finding to the patient's referring physician.
The National Osteoporosis Foundation generally recommends
bone density scans for all women aged 65 and older, postmenopausal
women who break a bone, and postmenopausal women with a known
risk factor, such as having a small frame or a parent or sibling
with the disease.
