Neonatal Intermediate Care Unit |
Central Maine Medical Center's Neonatal Intermediate Care Unit (NICU) specializes in caring for premature babies and infants with developmental problems or medical complications, including infections, breathing disorders, traumatic injuries, and metabolic and neurologic disorders. Infants are also evaluated and stabilized for the treatment of cardiac and surgical problems at other medical facilities.
Board-certified neonatologists with extensive experience in the care of premature and seriously ill children provide medical care on the NICU. The NICU nursing staff has many years of experience caring for premature infants.
The NICU staff approaches patient care by considering the baby's family. Care plans are individualized, and in addition to medical and nursing care may include social services, financial planning, post-discharge care, and home-care services.
CMMC's NICU serves a region that is home to some 400,000 people. Babies are often transported to and from other hospitals while cared for by physicians, nurses, and/or therapists who are specially trained in the care of premature and seriously ill infants.
As the only service of its kind in central and western Maine, CMMC’s NICU offers an extra level of security to families that choose CMMC’s Special Delivery Family Birthing Center as the place to have their baby.
