Mammogram |
Screening for breast cancer is one of the center's most important roles.
Mammography is a simple, low-level x-ray of the breast that can often detect lumps or changes too small to be felt manually. This is considered the best method to detect breast abnormalities. Performed by specially-trained female technologists, most mammogram studies can be completed in about 20 minutes.
There are two kinds of mammography: diagnostic and screening.
The screening mammography is used to look for breast changes in women who have no signs of breast cancer. A woman can self-refer for a screening mammogram.
A diagnostic mammogram is a procedure reserved for a woman who has unusual breast changes such as lumps, pain, nipple discharge, or other changes. This can be best performed on women after the age of 30 and needs a specific order from a physician or other clinician.
There are two types of mammography units: film screen and digital.
Presently, the Bennett Breast Care Center uses the film screen method and is awaiting the fine-tuning of digital mammography before obtaining a digital unit.
Both units use compression of the breast tissue. Remember, though this may be uncomfortable, it is absolutely essential because compression improves the accuracy of the test and reduces the amount of radiation needed to get a clear picture. Compression is not dangerous and does not cause any damage to the breast tissue.
