Breast Imaging Services Mammogram

Screening for breast cancer is one of The Sam and Jennie Bennett Breast Care Center’s most important roles.

Two new digital mammography systems were added in July of 2008. The addition of digital mammography provides our patients with the highest quality of care in the prevention and early detection of breast cancer. Digital mammography allows the radiologist to view and manipulate the images on high-resolution computer monitors to enhance visualization of the breast tissue. There is no waiting for films to be developed; significantly reducing the time the patient Digital Mammogram at CMMC Photospends in the breast center.

There are two kinds of mammography: diagnostic and screening.

Screening mammography is used to look for breast changes in women who have no signs of breast abnormality. Annual screening is recommended for women age 40 and older and does not require an order from a healthcare provider.

A diagnostic mammogram is a procedure reserved for a woman with known breast changes such as lumps, pain or nipple discharge. This can be best performed on women after the age of 30 and requires an order from a healthcare provider.

In conjunction with the digital mammography unit, The Center has also incorporated Computer-Aided Detection (CAD). This computer program assists the radiologist in making an accurate diagnosis by highlighting possible abnormalities that could be associated with breast disease. CAD is similar to a second set of eyes to support and enhance the radiologist’s interpretation.

Like conventional mammography, digital mammography uses compression of the breast tissue. Remember, though it may be uncomfortable, compression is absolutely essential because it improves the accuracy of the test and reduces the amount of radiation needed to get a clear picture. Compression is not dangerous and does not cause any damage to the breast tissue.
