Surgical Specialties

General Surgery

General surgeons primarily treat problems of the abdominal organs, as well as breast and skin cancers. Some general surgeons also perform gastric bypass surgery and thyroid surgery. Many general surgeons use a fiberoptic instrument called a laparoscope for such procedures as removal of the gallbladder, appendectomies, and hernia repairs. A laparoscopic procedure called a Nissen fundoplication is now used to treat chronic heartburn. Some general surgeons operate on the body’s vascular system. One commonly performed vascular access procedure connects an artery and a vein to create a high-flow system of circulation between the patient’s own system of vessels and a hemodialysis machine.
