Please note: obesity is not a cosmetic issue. It's a serious disease. And bariatric surgery is not for everyone. As a guideline, the National Institutes of Health uses the following criteria for patient selection for bariatric surgery:
- The patient is at least 100 pounds above their ideal body weight or has a BMI above 40, or
- The patient has a BMI of 35 or greater and additional health conditions affected by or associated with obesity. These include such conditions as diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, gastroesophageal reflux disease, and obstructive sleep apnea, just to name a few.
The most important thing to remember is that every patient is different. That's why we have two ways to help you learn more about Bariatric Surgery and other treatment options. We invite you to come to a free Weight Loss Surgery Information Sesson. We hold these the first Wednesday and third Monday of every month at our 12 High Street location in Lewiston, at 6:00 p.m., in the Chairman Conference Rooms A, B, and C. You'll hear from members of our Bariatrics Team and you'll have a chance to get your questions answered. We encourage all patients to attend one of these information meetings. Additionally, you may call to schedule a consultation at our Bariatric Surgery Clinic in Lewiston at Central Maine Medical Center.
Please remember. Obesity can kill you. It's a disease that must be treated. Use this site to learn more and then get in touch with Central Maine Medical Family and our Bariatric Surgery team. We are waiting for your call!
