Problems of the spine are one of the most common reasons individuals seek medical care. In fact, some 80 percent of people will experience significant back or neck pain during their lifetime. Fortunately, for the vast majority of these people the pain will subside naturally without the need for surgery. But some conditions require surgical intervention.

Orthopaedic surgeon Michael Regan, M.D., directs spine surgery at Central Maine Orthopaedics (CMO) and at the Orthopaedic Institute of Central Maine.

Dr. Regan's training includes an orthopaedic spine fellowship at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. He provides treatment of complex spine problems, including fracture, disc injury, arthritis and scoliosis. He is one of a only a few surgeons in New England qualified to treat compression fractures of the spine with kyphoplasy, a procedure that restores the shape and height of collapsed vertebrae utilizing a minimally invasive surgical technique.

CMO's spine surgery practice is located in a state-of-the-art orthopaedic treatment center that includes onsite x-ray, MRI, laboratory and physical therapy services.
