Orthopaedic Surgery Plays Essential Role in Trauma Care

Lifeflight patientThe Central Maine Medical Center Level II Trauma Program coordinates the services of a multidisciplinary team of specialists. Playing a central role on this team are Central Maine Orthopaedics (CMO) surgeons who treat patients with musculo-skeletal injuries.

CMMC is one of just three regional trauma centers providing care for the most complex trauma in Maine and parts of New Hampshire. The trauma service brings together a team of professionals from the LifeFlight of Maine medical helicopter service, the CMMC Emergency Department, CMMC Trauma Program Team, Orthopaedic Institute, and the CMO staff to provide a continuum of care for those who have sustained serious injuries.

CMO surgeons work closely with the hospital’s trauma-emergency physicians and other professional staff members to provide emergent care for injuries to bones, muscles, ligaments and tendons.

Following initial diagnosis and treatment in the CMMC Emergency Department, orthopaedic trauma patients are frequently transferred to the Orthopaedic Institute nursing unit for ongoing care and discharge planning by the OICM’s team of physicians, therapists, nurses, case managers and social workers.

OICM also serves as a regional referral center for reconstructive surgery for older injuries that require further surgery and/or treatment.
