Rehabilitation- The Healing Process Helping You Play a Key Role in Your Recovery

The Orthopaedic Institute of Central Maine's rehabilitation team works closely with patients and their families, providing education and helping them develop the skills needed for optimizing recovery and regaining function.

Therapists and nurses encourage active participation in the rehabilitation process throughout hospitalization and after discharge. Patients and families help the team understand the home environment and what support will be available at discharge. Therapists use this information to tailor training to meet specific situations. This training prepares patients for such activities as navigating entrances and stairs, getting in and out of vehicles, and managing self-care in the bathroom.

Because the patient's rehabilitation includes opportunities to practice self-care under the guidance of an experienced team, the patient develops the skills and confidence to make the fullest recovery possible.
