SBAR Ensures Safe Communication

Central Maine Medical Center and the Nursing Division are committed to developing teamwork and fostering a culture of patient safety. One of the tools that is recommended for nurses to use for effective safe communication is SBAR: the Situation-Background-Assessment-Recommendation technique.

The SBAR method provides a framework for communication about a patient's condition between members of the healthcare team. SBAR is an easy-to-remember, concrete mechanism useful for framing any conversation, especially critical ones, requiring a clinician's immediate attention and action. It offers an easy and focused way to set expectations for what will be communicated and how between members of the team, which is essential for teamwork and to foster a culture of safety. The SBAR technique can be used for many reasons: to organize information in preparation for communicating with a physician about a patient, to give a report to another caregiver in an organized focused format and to provide information to an emergency team responding to a critical situation.
