Autologous donation is the process by which an indiv= idual donates blood for his/her own use during elective surgery. Units of blood w= ill be drawn through the American Red Cross in the weeks prior to surgery and h= ave a shelf life of 42 days after the date of collection.

Autologous donations will be performed at the reques= t of the patient's physician. The donation times need to be scheduled in advance with the Special Collections Division of the American Red Cross. Generally, donors must meet all of the standard voluntary blood donor requirements. A patient may donate every four days (one/week recommended) w= ith a minimum of 14 days (two weeks recommended) prior to surgery. Special Collections forms must be = signed by the ordering physician. Completed forms should be faxed to the American Red Cross Special Collections Division at 781-461-2287. Special Collections specialists will contact the patient to schedule appointments either at CM= MC Blood Donor Center or at a blood drive in their location.
