Therapeutic Phlebotomy

Therapeutic Phlebotomy is the process by which a spe= cified volume of whole blood is drawn from a patient in order to decrease the patient’s hematocrit in patients with diseases such as polycythemia, = and hemachromotosis.

Therapeutic phlebotomies will be performed at the re= quest of the patient's physician. Phlebotomy times need to be scheduled in advance with the Infusion= Center (795-8310). = Infusion Center hours are Monday-Fr= iday, 7 AM to 5 PM. Physician orders should indicate diagnosis, frequency of donation, and hemoglobin/hematocrit cut-offs. Therapeutic phlebot= omy orders must be reviewed and a new order submitted every 6 months.

^Ordering

At each donation, an order will be generated for an Therapeutic Phlebotomy. The o= rder will be resulted with the volume of whole blood removed.
