These specimens are best collected in the morning for three consecutive days. The patient is requested to cough deeply which will supply adequate coagulum for optimal Cytological study.
Sputa are collected in three 100 mL. plastic containers, one for each day, preferably identified by numbers 1,2 and 3. E= ach of these containers contain approximately 30 mL.= of 70% ethanol which has been tinted blue. All specime= ns should be properly labeled with patient's name, DOB, physician and accompanied by a laboratory requisition (outpatient) or a “CYTOLOGY” order should be generated in the computer. The reque= st must contain pertinent clinical information and date collected. (Containers= may be obtained from the Histology Laboratory).
Sputum specimens obtained by suctioning may be sent = fresh to the laboratory but must be delivered promptly.
Please provide physician with "Bronchoscopy Orders" form to facilitate ordering of laboratory procedures. Appropriate clinical information s= hould be included in the space provided in the upper right corner.
Smears are prepared during the procedure and are immediately immersed in a coplin jar of 95% alcohol (available in advance f= rom the Histology laboratory. The frosted end of the slides should be labeled. The brush may also be submitted by immersing in Cytology cytospin collection fluid.
NOTE: = Adequacy of the specimen during this procedure may be determined by requesting the assistance of a Pathologist and Cytotechnologist. Please call Cytology (ext 8363) to schedule Pathology assistance in advance.
Smears are made during the procedure by expressing a= small amount of fluid onto a slide and using a second slide to evenly distribute = the material on both slides. The = labeled smears are immediately immersed in a coplin jar containing 95% alcohol (available from the Histology Lab). The jar is labeled and submitted to the laboratory. It is sometimes desirable to flush= the needle after the procedure as some material may be lodged in the needle. This is done with ste= rile saline and the container labeled with patient and specimen identification, = i.e. "transbronchial asp. - needle rinse - saline".
Fluid is submitted fresh in a sterile trap, properly labeled. Routine and special stains available.

All aspiration specimens are collected on sterile sl= ides, a second slide may be used to evenly distribute the material collected (as = many as 8 slides may be prepared).
The slides are promptly placed into a coplin jar con= taining 95% Alcohol (available from the Histology Laboratory). Use enough coplin ja= rs so that slides do not rest flat against one another. Do not allow to air-dr= y.
A small biopsy bottle containing 10% formalin (avail= able from the Histology Laboratory) is also needed for any minute tissue flecks which may be incidentally obtained during the procedure. These specimens wi= ll be submitted for histological study.

accompanied by a Surgical Pathology Form. This requisition must supply adeq=

clinical information. NOTE:
Heparinized specimens are preferred using approximat= ely 1000 units of Heparin to 500 mL of fluid. Body fluid specimens should be br= ought to the laboratory without delay to prevent degeneration of cells. The speci= men should be adequately labeled and a “CYTOLOGY” order should be generated in the computer. Include all appropriate clinical information, particularly any known or suspected malignancy.
Fresh voided or catheterized specimens are acceptabl= e and first morning specimens are not required. Twenty-four hour specimens are unacceptable for cytology, due to rapid autolysis. Specimens should be brou= ght to the Laboratory without delay. If delay is unavoidable, the specimen shou= ld be refrigerated. Specimen should be accompanied by a laboratory requisition (outpatient) or a “CYTOLOGY” order should be generated in the computer.
Specimens are submitted fresh to the laboratory, pro= perly identified and a “CYTOLOGY” order should be generated in the computer. This should contain all appropriate clinical information, particularly ant known or suspected malignancy.
Smears for the diagnosis of cellular changes associa= ted with Herpes Virus, including multinucleated giant cells should arrive in the laboratory as prepared smears either fixed in alcohol or spray fixed. Swabs= are unacceptable. These smears are usually prepared by breaking a vesicle, scraping the floor of the broken vesicle and smearing it on to a clean slid= e. Regardless of method, the smears must be fixed immediately.
Slides must be properly identified and accompanied b= y a laboratory requisition (outpatient) or a “CYTOLOGY” order shoul= d be generated in the computer, giving the specimen source and pertinent clinical information.
Specimens for cytology should be submitted as fixed = smears (alcohol immersion or spray fixed) with the patient's name written in penci= l on the frosted end of the slide and be accompanied by a laboratory requisition (outpatient) or a “CYTOLOGY” order should be generated in the computer. The source should be identified and any pertinent clinical information given.
