Histology/Surgical Pathology Specimens
Tissue specimens for pathological examination must be preserved as indicated below and delivered directly to a technologist in the Laboratory.
1. = Small tissue samples, such as biopsies, skin lesions and curettage<= /b>, are submitted in 10% Neutral Buffered Formalin. In some instances, however, small tissue samples may require special studies, such as lymph nodes and s= ome skin lesions. With these cases it is imperative that the specimen be receiv= ed in the fresh state, preferably on a saline soaked TELFA pad. If there is any question concerning these types of cases, the Histology Lab should be conta= cted prior to this procedure.
2. = Larger tissue specimens, such as = colon, kidney, lung or breast are= sent to the lab in the fresh state, but ONLY during normal working hours of= the Histology Lab (8 am to 5 pm, Monday through Friday). It is imperative th= at specimens in the fresh state be received within 1 hour of removal. These specimens must also be pr= operly identified and placed in an appropriate Bio-Hazard container. After hours and on weekends, any specimen (except amputations) arriving in the histology laboratory should b= e in the appropriate fixative.
3. = Gastric and Colonic Biopsies, whi= ch are performed in Endoscopy, are submitted in BOUIN’S FIXATIVE.
4. = Placentas are sent to the lab in = fresh state and lab personnel will ensure that the proper fixative is added to the specimen.

Frozen Section
Sign-off sheets must accompany ALL specimens from En= do and the OR Suite. These must also note patient name, date of service and specim= en source. When all criteria have been met, lab personnel will sign and accept the specimen.= If not, the specimen will be rejected until errors have been corrected.
Bouin’s Fixative, 10% Neutral Buffered Formali= n and other relevant supplies may be obtained from the Histology Laboratory.
