Chlam= ydia & GC Sample Collection (Gen-Probe)
The Gen-Probe Aptima® assay is an amplified DNA probe for the detection of Chlamydia trachomatis or N= eisseria gonorrhea (GC) in urine or swab samples. The urine sample is suitable for screening or diagnostic testing in males and females. Only the sources listed below are acceptable for testing by this method.
Swab Collection Procedure
APTIMA Combo 2 Assay Unisex Swab Specimen Collection Kit for Endocervical, Male Urethral, Pharyngeal and Rectal Swab Specimens.
1. = Remove excess mucus from the cervical os and surroundi= ng mucosa using the cleaning swab (white shaft).
2. = Discard this Swab.
3. = Insert the specimen collection swab (blue shaft) into the end= ocervical canal.
4. = Gently rotate the swab clockwise for 10 to 30 seconds in the = endocervical canal to ensure adequate sampling.
5. = Withdraw the swab carefully; avoid any contact with the vaginal mucosa.
6. = Remove the cap from the swab specimen transport tube and immediately place the specimen collection swab into the transport tube.
7. = Carefully break the swab shaft at the score line; use care to avoid splashing = of contents.
8. = Re-cap the swab specimen transport tube tightly.
1. = The patient should not have urinated for at least one hour prior to sample collection.
2. = Insert the specimen collection swab (blue shaft) 2 to 4 cm. into the urethra.
3. = Gently rotate the swab clockwise for 2 to 3 seconds in the urethra to ensure adequ= ate sampling.
4. = Withdraw the swab carefully.
5. = Remove the cap from the swab specimen transport tube and immediately place the specimen collection swab into the transport tube.
6. = Carefully break the swab shaft at the score line, use care to avoid splashing = of contents.
7. = Re-cap the swab specimen transport tube tightly.
Pharyngeal S=
wab
Specimens:
1. = Vigorously rub the tonsils and posterior pharynx with the blue shaft swab. The use of a tongue depressor may = be helpful.
2. = Carefully remove the swab, not touching any area of the mouth. Immediately place the blue swab in= to the specimen transport tube. =
3. = Break the swab at the scoreline.
4. = Recap the tube tightly.
Rectal Swab
Specimens:
1. = Insert the blue shaft swab 3 - 5 cm into the rectum and rotate against the rectal = wall several times.
2. = Repeat the process if the swab is grossly contaminated with feces.
3. = Immediately place the blue swab in to the specimen transport tube.
4. = Break the swab at the scoreline.
5. = Recap the tube tightly.
Label the sample wit=

patient name, date of collection, MRN or DOB and sample source. Transport a=
nd
store swab specimen transport tube at 2 – 30 °C. Assay within 60 =
days
of collection. If longer storage is needed, store at -20 °C or -70 °=
;C
for up to 90 days.
Urine Collection Procedure
APTIMA Combo 2 Assay Urine Specimen Collection Kit
1. = The patient should not have urinated for at least one hour prior sampling.
2. = Direct patient to provide a first-catch urine (approximately 20 to 30 mL o= f the initial urine stream) into a urine collection cup. Collection of larger volumes of urine may reduce test sensitivity. Female patients should not cleanse the labial area prior to providing the specimen.
3. = Remove the cap and transfer 2 mL of urine into the urine specimen transport tube u= sing the disposable pipette provided. The correct volume of urine has been added when the fluid level is between the black lines on the urine specimen trans= port tube label.
4. = Re-cap the urine specimen transport tube tightly.= This is now known as the processed urine specimen.
Label the sample with the patient name, date of
collection, MRN or DOB and sample source. Urine specimens can be transporte=
d to
the laboratory at 2 - 30 °C in either the primary collection device (ur=
ine
cup) or in the urine specimen transport tube. Urine specimens must be
maintained at 2 – 30 °C and must be transferred into the specimen
transport tube within 24 hours of collection. Processed urine specimens mus=
t be
tested within 30 days of collection.
