Glucose Fasting, Random or Post-prandial

Mnemonic:    [GLUC]
Name:    Glucose Fasting, Random or Post-prandial
Specimen:    1 mL serum from a Red SST or Red top tube, or plasma from a Green PST. Deliver to the lab immediately or centrifuge the sample within one hour of collection.

If not collected in a serum separator tube (SST), the serum/plasma must be placed in a separate, correctly labeled sample tube.
Reference Range:    70 - 100 mg/dL (Fasting)
Critical Range:    < 50 or > 500 mg/dL
  Method:    Colorimetric; Glucose Oxidase
Note:    A 12 hour fast is recommended for a fasting glucose. Water ONLY is permitted. No coffe, tea, sodas, gums or artificial flavorings.

For fasting specimens indicate the number of hours since the patient has been fasting.

For post-prandial samples indicate how many hours since the previous meal was ingested.
