AFB (Acid Fast Bacilli) Culture, Sputum/Biopsy/Fluid/Aspirate

Name:    AFB (Acid Fast Bacilli) Culture, Sputum/Biopsy/Fluid/Aspirate
Specimen:    Submit specimen in a sterile container.
Respiratory: Collect 1-10cc of following specimens:
- Sputum deep cough, early morning
- Induced Sputum
- Tracheal Aspirate
- Bronchial Washing (BW)
- Bronchoalveolar Lavage (BAL)

Body Fluids: Collect aseptically 1-10cc of the following specimens (minimum volume accepted- 1cc)
- Cerebrospinal Fluid (CSF)
- Pleural Fluid
- Pericardial Fluid
- Synovial Fluid
- Ascitic Fluid

Bone Marrow: Collect 1-5cc of specimen in a heparin tube.

Tissue, Bone, Biopsy specimens: Collect in a sterile container. Add 1-2cc of sterile water or saline (do not send dry or in a gauze).

Urine: Collect first morning specimen, ship on ice (no 24 hr samples)

Exudates, Pus, and Drainage: Specimens may be collected on culturette swab.

Port-a-cul swabs are NOTsuitable for acid fast culture.

Reference Range:    No growth
Critical Range:    Positive
Note:    Deliver tissues, biopsies immediately.
Sputum, fluid specimens may be held up to 24 hours refrigerated.

Negatives are preliminarily reported @ 3 days with final reports @ 6 weeks.
Positives are reported immediately.
