Central Maine Comprehensive Cancer Center Medical Oncology

Hematology is concerned with diseases of the blood, spleen and lymph glands, focusing on such conditions as anemia, clotting disorders, sickle call disease, hemophilia, leukemia and lymphoma. Hematologists perform special types of transfusions and biopsy bone marrow for analysis.

Medical oncology is the diagnosis and treatment of all types of cancer, as well as benign tumors. Medical oncologists select and administer chemotherapy for malignancy, and consult with surgeons and radiotherapists regarding other cancer treatments.

Physicians who pursue certification in hematology and medical oncology through the American Board of Internal Medicine must first be certified in internal medicine.
