Central Maine Medical Center maintains two funds to assist cancer patients with extraordinary expenses: The Cancer Care Immediate Needs Fund and the Daniel N. Smith Fund for Patients and Families Affected by Cancer. We also provide free or reduced fee medical care for those patients who are unable to pay and meet certain income guidelines.
The Cancer Care Immediate Needs Fund, sponsored primarily by the CMMC Woman’s Hospital Association, and supported by donations from patients, families, and community members, provides a resource to help pay for the essential needs of cancer patients when their financial resources are depleted. Patients should not have to decide between the necessities of daily living and the necessities of good healthcare. The Immediate Needs Fund is a resource that the CMMC oncology staff uses to assist oncology patients who have financial needs that must be immediately met. This fund provides cash to pay for medications, medical equipment, groceries and, on occasion, even utility bills. The Immediate Needs Fund can help ease the financial worries of cancer patients during a difficult time.
The Daniel N. Smith Fund for Patients and Families Affected by Cancer was created by the Daniel N. Smith Foundation to honor the late Daniel “Danny” Smith, a courageous young gentleman who succumbed to lung cancer in 2003. Danny was a well-known and beloved community member who was treated at the Comprehensive Cancer Program of CMMC. Following his death, his family members and friends created the foundation with the intention of alleviating the financial distress that patients and their family members often experience while a patient is going through treatment. The fund provides financial assistance to families who must travel and occasionally obtain lodging in order to be near their loved one during treatment.
Central Maine Medical Family’s mission is to provide access to medically necessary health care to all patients, regardless of their ability to pay. For patients who are above the Maine Free Care guidelines, CMMC, Bridgton Hospital, and Rumford Hospital offers free or reduced fee care to patients who are at or below certain income levels.
