CMMC Cancer Registry Helps With Research

In 1983, a state law was passed that requires Maine hospitals to report the incidences of patients with malignant tumors and benign brain tumors. The purpose of the law is to collect information that will be helpful in evaluating factors that determine cancer types and rates, which may help in the efforts to reduce cancer rates.

Central Maine Medical Center has a Cancer Registry which includes a data system that collects, manages and analyzes cancer patient data.

The data is also used at CMMC to educate medical staff, analyze treatment results, and evaluate the quality of care. The data system is managed by a Certified Tumor Registrar (CTR).

The registry obtains continually updated information through hospital, physician and patient contact. We ask for our patients' help in keeping information current. (From a healthcare perspective, we also encourage our cancer patients to follow up with appropriate check-ups with healthcare providers.) All cancer patient information is treated with confidentiality; cancer data is used without personal identifiers.

The Cancer Registry also works with the Cancer Committee to sponsor educational programs for CMMC's medical staff, including participation in national cancer conferences. The registry also provides statistics for the Cancer Program's annual report.
