Cystoscopy |
What is a cystoscopy?
Cystoscopy is a procedure, performed by a urologist, that
allows the doctor to look directly inside the urethra and
bladder.
Testing Instructions
Tell the nurse or urologist if you take medication, especially
aspirin or blood thinners. No other specific instructions
are necessary to prepare for a cystoscopy.
What will happen at the appointment?
- Both a nurse and urologist are present for the cystoscopy.
- The nurse will take your vital signs.
- The patient will be asked to sign a consent form.
- The patient will lie on an exam table with his or her
knees bent and legs slightly apart.
- The urethra and the area around it is washed with an antiseptic.
- An anesthetic jelly is applied to numb the urethra.
- The cystoscope is inserted into the urethra.
- The urologist looking through the scope inspects the lining
of the urethra and the bladder.
The procedure usually takes about five to ten minutes. Once
the procedure is complete, the urologist discusses the results
and any further recommendations with the patient. The nurse
will also give the patient some discharge instructions, which
explains what to expect. The patient is able to drive home. |
